One of the things that struck me about Escape from New York, and the way that Snake was able to walk through various buildings within New York when he was being chased by the gangs, was that he never encountered any form of home security left over by NY’s previous inhabitants. Sure, New York had been a top security prison for many years, but considering the level of security employed by many New Yorkers, you’d think something would have been left over by residents such as an alarm system, or form of security lighting.
New York, even before it became a prison in Escape from New York, was a dangerous place with a fairly high crime rate, and with so many security products being implemented by ADT New York must have been awash with alarms, sensors and CCTV cameras by the time Snake Plissken was dropped into the city to rescue the president from the Duke of New York.
It’s surprising actually that you never see security systems left on in any post-apocalyptic films, such as Mad Max or The Postman. Considering that the films themselves show the eventual degradation of society, where people become increasingly distrustful of others and hostile towards strangers, you’d think there’d be more in the way of alarm systems.
Of course, you’d probably get alarms going off all the time if that was the case, and nobody would take a blind bit of notice about them; just like they don’t now actually.
Here’s one of the many posters for Escape From New York, featuring Kurt Russelj on the cover and the Statue of Liberty head behind him. This is one of our favourite posters.
For those that have been asking, because I know it has been a source of much debate, Jamie Lee Curtis, the star of Halloween, was indeed in Escape from New York. She was uncredited and played the Narrator/computer voice.
We just wanted to apologise for the lack of updates on Escape From New York lately, but we’ll have some interesting stuff to add shortly. We’ve uncovered some high res film still for example, including this one.
We’ll have a lot more like this soon so keep posted!
